A New Chapter Begins Here
Westside Lofts is a 43-residence loft community located inside the former West Side Junior High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The building already had what most new developments spend heavily trying to create: history, character, scale, and a real sense of place.
What it did not have was an identity.
There was no formal brand system, no exterior signage, no clear sense of arrival, and no consistent story connecting the building’s schoolhouse past to its new life as loft residences. The property had architectural charm, but it was not showing up with the confidence of a place people could recognize, remember, and choose.
FRESH saw the opportunity in what was already there. This was not a project that needed to be invented from scratch. It needed to be reintroduced.
The Business Problem
Westside Lofts had hidden value.
For a residential property, that is a real problem. If people cannot understand the story, see the entrance, feel the personality, or picture themselves living there, the building has to work harder than it should.
The challenge was to create a brand experience that could support leasing, strengthen street presence, and make the property feel more intentional without stripping away the character that made it special in the first place.
It needed to feel historic, but not dusty. Residential, but not generic. Familiar, but still fresh.
Good bones. Bad name tag.
The Strategic Idea
The most valuable part of Westside Lofts was the original schoolhouse.
The long corridors, classroom proportions, tall ceilings, institutional details, and Bearcat history were not background details. They were the brand assets. FRESH leaned into the building’s educational past and shaped the identity around a modern schoolhouse sensibility.
The core idea became:
Westside Lofts did not need to be reinvented. It needed to be reintroduced.
That idea gave the project a clear creative and business direction: use the building’s history to make the property more memorable, more ownable, and more emotionally connected to residents.
Why It Matters
The work gave Westside Lofts something every residential property needs: a clearer reason to care.
The identity made the building easier to recognize. The signage created a stronger sense of arrival. The environmental and interior direction helped turn overlooked spaces into moments of story, memory, and connection.
For a developer or property owner, that matters because brand is not just how a place looks. It affects how a place is perceived, how it is toured, how it is remembered, and how confidently it can be marketed.
Westside Lofts became more than a converted school building.
It became a historic residential community with a point of view.
Final Bell
Westside Lofts is where good bones, local history, and thoughtful design came together to create a new class of living in Little Rock.
